Phoenix to Compete in the International Tech-Olympics: Smart City App Hack

The City of Phoenix will participate in Smart City App Hack, the international competition to develop apps that present a solution to a global civic challenge.

The Phoenix Smart City App Hack is the local portion of the competition and an app acceleration program that will go from the end of June through October.  Local app developers, entrepreneurs and residents are invited to submit web or mobile applications that incorporate solutions targeted to improve the five main themes identified as common global challenges: urban mobility, energy and emissions, shopping and retail, culture and tourism, the collaborative city.

The competition begins with a “Call for Entries” period from June 27 to August 1. During this period, teams or individuals can submit their projects – ranging from ideas to developed apps or businesses – for consideration for the Acceleration Phase.

Five finalists will be selected by a panel of industry professionals and Phoenix city officials. Selected finalists will receive additional mentorship from local companies and development professionals to prepare their app for market adoption and implementation.  New participants may still join during this period and are permitted to submit an existing, finished app directly to the online competition.

The contest will conclude with a City Finale where the five finalists, and all apps submitted through the Online Competition, will compete by pitching live on stage to a panel of judges.  Three City winners will be chosen and awarded cash prizes and entrance into the international Smart City App Hack. The Grand Champion will be sent, all-expenses paid, to represent the City of Phoenix at the international grand finale at the Smart City Expo 2015 in Barcelona.

In addition to the recognition of building a solution for the Phoenix community, creators of the top three apps will win cash prizes: $3,000 for first place; $1,000 for second place; and $500 for third place.
