November 3rd 2015. Barcelona.- 11 cities, 8 countries, 6500 engaged citizens and 164 mobile applications – these are the impressive numbers of the first edition of the Smart City App Hack (SCAH). The 15 best apps from cities such as New York, Barcelona and Dubai will present live on stage on the 17th and 18th of November at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona.

The Smart City App Hack, initiated by the City of Barcelona and run by dotopen, a Barcelona based company, united 11 smart cities across the globe including Barcelona, Dubai, Phoenix, Helsinki, Lyon, San Francisco and New York. These cities came together in order to engage citizens to create app based solutions for some of the challenges 21st Century cities face today in urban mobility, energy and emissions, retail and shopping, culture and tourism and the collaborative city.

SCAH has been launched during Mobile World Congress 2015 and citizens all over the world met in Hackathons to create teams and first app concepts. These ideas then have been incubated in 5 month with support from online mentors helping participants to turn their ideas into apps that can be downloaded and used. The subsequent city competitions and award ceremonies selected the 15 best apps to come and compete for the SCAH global prizes during Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona.

This Grand Finale will take place on the 17th and 18th with presentations live on stage from applications from Barcelona, New York, San Francisco, Lyon, Helsinki, Phoenix and Dubai. Each app will have 3 minutes to present before of a jury of experts who will then choose the 5 winners – one for each challenge area.

On the 17th (17:00-18:00), apps in Energy, Retail and Shopping, and Culture and Tourism categories will compete. The second round will take place on the 18th (17:00-18:00), with apps for Urban Mobility and Collaborative City. Each of the 5 challenge categories will be awarded with  5,000 euros.
