Phoenix Smart City App Hack Finalists to Showcase Ideas at Grand Finale Event

The five finalists for the first annual Phoenix Smart City App Hack (PSCAH), a unique competition to identify community invented civic-focused solutions, will showcase prototypes of their apps for the community at the Orpheum Theater – 203 West Adams Street, Phoenix on October 22 with a Cocktail Reception from (4:30pm – 6:30pm) and the Grand Finale (6:45 – 8pm) where the Grand Champion will be selected. CLICK HERE FOR YOUR FREE TICKETS!

The Phoenix Champion will represent the City of Phoenix as part of the top 15 apps at the global level at the grand finale of the Smart City Expo 2015 in Barcelona. The Phoenix Smart City App Hack solicited ideas for apps that would enhance the engagement between local government and its citizens. The Phoenix SCAH is a competition of brainstorming and computer programming that spans several months. It draws together the talent and creativity of individuals along with software developers, designers, and subject-matter experts all working toward the creation of a winning application focused on providing a better life in the city.

The winning application is then refined and piloted during an incubation period, allowing for a more fully-formed and sustainable tool. In addition, the City of Phoenix joins other pioneering cities sharing similar challenges and one vision: to empower citizens to become app makers and create app solutions for the city of the 21st century. Phoenix Smart City App Hack winners participate in the international Smart City App Hack (SCAH) in Barcelona that connects cities worldwide to help local app makers get free mentorship for building their smart city app: from idea to downloadable app.

The finalists

Over the past eight weeks, finalists have worked on designing, coding and developing their civic apps. To help facilitate the challenge, they also had the rare opportunity to work with many of the brightest developers in Arizona. Finalist teams spent valuable time with developers who offered advice, suggestions and answers to some of the more pressing questions the finalists had.

Finalist ideas include: cities saving money on their parking infrastructure, another for placing orders for local food, clothing, sports gear, book hotels, rental cars, and more, one that helps people who are in between due to an illness, another connecting caring citizens with other caring citizens and to city officials, and finally one that allows commuters who use public transportation to know exactly where all the buses are within a 90 seconds accuracy.

In addition to the recognition of building a solution for the community, creators of the top three apps will win cash prizes: First Prize-$3,000; Second Prize-$1,000; and Third Prize-$500
